The third nominee for this year’s MHF Defender Award is Senator Michael Webber. While the first and second nominations addressed licensing barriers to healthcare freedom, this time the issue is health insurance.

Don’t let his pleasant, professional manner fool you. Albeit brief, his testimony spotlights a fatal flaw in Michigan’s proposed health insurance exchange.

 

Lower health insurance costs are the holy grail of health policy. Unfortunately for central planners, big solutions either fall short on promised results, or prove to be unsustainable, or both.

Health Insurance Exchange premiums

Health insurance prices are already high, and according to Kaiser Family Foundation and others, they will rise again soon.

Most of us remember only the three most famous broken promises of the ACA/ Obamacare – You can keep your plan, you can keep your doctor, and premiums will come down.

In reality, there were more than a dozen failed promises.

Michigan bills: “Entrench Obamacare”

Advocates touted the bill package as a way to entrench Obamacare in Michigan law, fearing that the Trump administration will dismantle parts of the federal healthcare program.

However, failures of Idaho and Vermont state exchanges do not bode well for a Michigan experiment.
