Insights & Action: Today’s Clash of Worldviews in Lansing Health Policy

by | Oct 7, 2021

Good morning!

I’d like to present a contrast to you today.
Two worldviews are battling for control of healthcare.
One perspective values each individual life as a gift from God. Humans are born with equal inherent worth. Law protects God-given individual rights and responsibilities. Once life is lived, judgment comes; perfection rewards the righteous in eternity.
Traditional US healthcare is based on the Christian worldview.
Valued traits and principles are:
  • individual creativity, innovation, & hard work produce abundance
  • raising a family
  • following conscience
  • personal responsibility for health decisions
  • the Golden Rule: doing unto others as you would have them do to you
  • charity is an individual act
  • faith in God
Population Care is part of the progressive worldview, which sees humanity in the collective, as demographic groups rather than individuals. (AMA)   A perfect society is possible, given the right system and experts in charge. Law grants equality of possessions, treatment by others, etc.
The valued traits related to Population Care are:
  • compliance with rules and regulations
  • standardized systems
  • central control
  • uniform results
  • system assumes individual risk (NIH) and outcomes (CDC)
  • scientific knowledge
  • rationed care
  • redistribution of wealth from a fixed pie
