MDHHS hosting feedback sessions about direct care and behavioral health services

LANSING, Mich. – To better understand the challenges of people who work in or receive services from direct care and behavioral health services, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) is hosting a series of virtual feedback sessions starting Tuesday, June 6.

MDHHS has partnered with Health Management Associates and Public Sector Consultants to get feedback from stakeholders, caregivers and patients. Sessions will focus on identifying unique regional challenges and considering possible solutions to address those challenges.

“Through discussions with direct care workers, behavioral health professionals, employers and consumers we want to identify direct care and behavioral health workforce needs, examine the impact of workforce shortages and develop potential solutions to overcome these challenges,” said Elizabeth Hertel, MDHHS director. “This information will then be compiled and shared with policymakers as we work on solutions that could include enhancing pay, developing career pathways, prioritizing family supports, and implementing innovative training and retention practices.”

The following four sessions will be conducted via Zoom:

  • Direct Care Worker Discussion Group – Tuesday, June 6, 6:30 – 8 p.m.
  • Behavioral Health Discussion Group – Wednesday, June 7, 3:30 – 5 p.m.
  • Consumer Discussion Group – Thursday, June 8, 1:30 – 3 p.m.
  • Statewide Feedback Session – Wednesday, June 14, 2 – 4 p.m.

Other than the statewide session, discussion groups will be limited to 20 participants. To register for a virtual session, visit pscinc.co/workforce.

A little context:

  1. The State of MI bureaucracy (MDHHS and DIFS) benefits by keeping Medicaid enrollment high. (The bureaucratic mindset is to justify more budget + more staff to gain self-esteem. Plus the progressive mindset is government insurance for all.)
  2. Michigan is in the middle of Medicaid redeterminations - the first since COVID policy put qualification-checks on hold.
    1. Enrollment is expected to drop, since Michigan Medicaid and Healthy Michigan have accululated MANY unqualified participants.
    2. Michigan is stretching out the process and advertising to retain more enrollees.
  3. Michigan clinicians have been fleeing Medicaid for decades because the system is a royal pain.
(Massively complex, laden with rules, rigid and clunky to use. And low reimbursement makes it impossible to hire enough billers to keep up.)
    1. This is the first time I've seen MDHHS reach out like this. Which is not to say it hasn't happened before, or that it's a bad idea - just that customer service is not #1 in a bureaucracy.
    2. It's an opportunity to expose hidden issues and advocate for freedom.

Who should be part of this conversation?

Patients, clinicians, billing & coding staff, homecare agencies, direct caregivers who left Medicaid jobs to go independent, insurance agents who hear patient stories of poor service, people familiar with simpler alternatives (eg, put funds in patient hands like HSA for Medicaid - Indiana did this).
