Guilds supposedly died away after the Middle Ages, but their rigid, hierarchical structure and political influence are alive and well in state health policy.

Professional Continuing Education (CE) required for license renewal lends itself to constant legislative tweaking.

Whether it raises healthcare quality one iota remains to be proven.
