It's not news that locally-controlled healthcare is under attack, or that declaring cause of death can be a powerful political tool. (In addition to having a powerful impact on patient families and others they knew.)

Thursday, the Michigan House advances major changes to county medical examiner practices.

HB 5043 re-writes the traditional chain of local responsibility to declare cause of death.

It also eliminates local medical examiner reports, and replaces them with an MDHHS website form. In addition, it mandates ME documentation on the site and undergoing MDHHS training to do so.

This is on top of past legislation giving MDHHS authority to declare cause of death if local the ME has not done so within 48 hours.

HB 5044 expands which deaths the ME must investigate.

If you want to see classic, petty, poorly-framed state micromanagement, check out the sharps container bill.

State-produced insulin, anyone?

Or how about a new way for the state to get in on our health information?

Plus a second hearing on changing ME law, and a few more.
