There are a lot of corporate weasel words in this press release, but it appears that U of M's health operation is attempting to stem the losses which contributed to President Santa Ono's sudden departure. Michigan Medicine generated $ 7.25 billion in clinical care revenue during 2023. All other U of M activities - including their flagship universities - generated only $ 3.68 billion in revenues in 2023.
U of M as a whole incurred an operating loss of $ 1.57 billion during 2023. U of M has not yet published their 2024 financial numbers, but they will probably be even more exciting. At their current cash burn rate, they will go bust within 10 years unless they radically revise their businesses.
Longitude Health is an attempt to rescue the finances of health care providers before the financiers of health care impose draconian controls:
Michigan Medicine joins Longitude Health as new founding member
Top academic medical center partners with other leading health systems to drive systemwide innovation and performance
By Mary Masson - May 19, 2025Longitude Health announced today that Michigan Medicine, the academic medical center and statewide health system of the University of Michigan, has joined the organization as a member. As part of this milestone, David Miller, M.D., M.P.H., president of U-M Health, will join the Longitude Health Board of Managers.
The addition of Michigan Medicine marks the first new member to join Longitude Health since its launch in October 2024, underscoring both the strength of its collaborative model and the shared vision that unites its members. Michigan Medicine will play an integral role in shaping the continued development of Longitude Health’s initial initiatives, including Longitude Rx (specialty pharmacy), Longitude PHM (population health), and Longitude FX (financial experience).
“We are thrilled to welcome Michigan Medicine as a member of Longitude Health,” said Brett Moraski, interim CEO of Longitude Health. “Their reputation as one of the nation’s top academic health systems—and their deep bench of clinical, operational, and innovative leaders—makes them an invaluable partner. Their participation strengthens our ability to deliver on the Longitude Health mission and scale solutions that will improve health care for patients and providers across the country.”
“The challenges in health care today require bold new models for collaboration and innovation,” said Miller. “By joining Longitude Health, we are embracing a new era of partnership—one that puts health systems at the center of solution development. We look forward to shaping initiatives in specialty pharmacy, population health and financial experience—as well as others to come—from the start, alongside some of the most forward-thinking systems in the country.”
Longitude Health will continue to welcome additional high-performing health systems that share its mission and values. Member organizations play a central role in shaping strategic priorities, developing new capabilities, and driving scalable solutions that benefit patients, providers and communities across the country. As it continues to grow, Longitude Health will remain committed to transforming health care through partnership, innovation and bold action.
“When we launched Longitude Health, our goal was to unite high-performing, like-minded organizations committed to driving change,” said Pete McCanna, chair of the Longitude Health Board and CEO of Baylor Scott & White Health. “The addition of Michigan Medicine exemplifies this. Their membership signals not only continued growth of the collaborative, but growing momentum, as we steadily build capabilities to benefit health systems and customers across the country.”
Founded in 2024 by Baylor Scott & White Health, Memorial Hermann Health System, Novant Health, and Providence, Longitude Health is designed to solve the most pressing challenges facing health systems. By pooling talent, capital and ideas across member organizations, Longitude Health develops and scales next-generation solutions in high-priority areas like specialty pharmacy access, value-based care, and the patient financial experience.
Built on a unique collaboration model, Longitude Health identifies, develops, and scales capability-based solutions to centralize core operational functions and transform health system performance. Its mission is grounded in three pillars:
* Transform Business Models: Develop and integrate innovative solutions to address health care’s most pressing challenges.
* Improve Health System Performance: Enhance key dimensions such as cost, quality, access and patient experience.
* Empower Healthier Futures: Build equity value by scaling sustainable capabilities that benefit patients and communities.Michigan Medicine’s participation reflects a growing interest from top-tier health systems in joining a movement that is led by health systems, for health systems.

U of M just posted their FY 2024 financials. Michigan Medicine generated $ 8.02 billion in clinical care revenue during 2024. All other U of M activities - including their flagship universities - generated only $ 3.93 billion in revenues in 2024.
U of M as a whole incurred an operating loss of $ 1.32 billion during 2024. They improved their net position by almost a billion dollars through investment gains in their endowment, but do not state how much of that is earmarked. Their endowment is now $ 20.57 billion.
