HB 4550 (Rep. Young) Health facilities; hospitals; development of a staffing plan for nurses; require.
HB 4551 (Rep. Coffia) Health facilities; hospitals; mandatory overtime for nurses; prohibit except under certain circumstances.
HB 4552 (Rep. Rheingans) Health facilities; hospitals; record of direct care registered professional nurse-to-patient ratios for each unit for each shift; require hospitals to maintain.

This is painful.
If these bills pass, the end result will be two-fold.
- Hospitals will do what they have to do to stay afloat, which is what they're doing right now.
- Nurses and the public will think the new law solved the nursing shortage, and be indignant when experience tells them otherwise.
Some things law can do, some things it cannot.
The law can kill. It cannot create life.
As a society, we need to face the facts of the nursing shortage head-on.
The top-down regulated system is chewing up nurses and spitting them out. More regulations will just destroy more nurses.
Keep doing the same thing, we'll keep getting the same results.
