CMS 2023 Hospital Quality Ratings; Now Including VA Hospitals

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) updated its Overall Hospital Quality Star Ratings and its Hospital  Patient Survey Ratings on its Care Compare (for Michigan Hospitals) web page, which for the first time includes Veterans Health Administration (VA) hospitals. Updated yearly, the Overall Star Rating summarizes data from existing measurements on Care Compare for each hospital to allow patients and caregivers to compare hospitals.  The CMS Care Compare website now lists 150 hospitals in Michigan.

"Not available" is the most common CMS hospital rating in Michigan, both for the Overall Hospital Star Rating and for the Patient Survey Rating.  Overall Hospital Star Ratings and Patient Survey Ratings often don't agree for hospitals, suggesting some gaming of the CMS rating systems by hospital managements.
